Would You Quit Facebook Until You Raised Enough Money?

Would You Quit Facebook Until You Raised Enough Money?

You may have noticed several of your Facebook friends changing their profile pictures to their favorite childhood cartoon this past week. Well, that could have something to do with what several celebrities have done in the name of a charity. Alicia Keys’ charity called Keep A Child Alive has staged a new campaign that had celebs such as Lady GaGa, Justin Timberlake and Usher sign off their social network accounts such as Facebook and Twitter until they raise $1 million for World AIDS Day. Some celebrities filmed “last tweet and testament” that showed them lying coffins to represent their “digital death.” In an interview, Keys described the “Digital Life Sacrifice” concept behind the campaign:

“It’s really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on. It’s so important to shock you to the point of waking up. It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that. This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention.”

President and co-founder of Keep A Child Alive, Leigh Blake was quoted saying:

“We’re trying to sort of make the remark: Why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we’re all from? It’s about love and respect and human dignity… I think GaGa is going to raise it all by herelf. She’s got a very, very mobilized fan base and that’s beautiful to watch I think (and) she’s able to draw their attention to these issues that are very important, you know, and that people follow it and act.”

This is a great charity that definitely benefits a good cause. Not that changing your Facebook profile to your favorite childhood character helps to benefit the charity, but at least you recognize what’s going on and support the celeb’s initiatives virtually. Kudos to all.
