GM EN-V Electric Prototype Vehicle

General Motors takes us on a crazy test ride in the EN-V electric prototype vehicle (video)

Most cars these days are oversized, obnoxious, road hogs. Of course, this may or may not include the drivers inside. And having a big rig comes in handy when you’ve just bought a load of large items from one of the big box hardware stores. However, that big rig isn’t as ideal when you need to run up the street to grab something like milk and bread from the grocery store. General Motors thinks they have a different solution to some of these daily vehicle problems. Some. The EN-V, which stands for Electric Networked-Vehicle. Of course, this is a car of the future, and it’s not quite the future yet. Of course, you won’t look at this car and ooh and aah over it like you would with a luxury sports car. It’s electric, the entire powertrain is a flat slab that the car sits on and so far, it’s been dubbed the “skateboard.” The body of the car slides forward or backward to balance, and to go forward the body simply leans forward. It has simple specs: 1,100 lbs, 31 mile range, and 31mph. It seats two, has no suspension, but has awesome networking. The cars can talk to each other. Literally. As in, “Get out of my way.” The cas can also follow each other, a practice called platooning, with one car automatically (and safely) running in the tracks of the other. CRAZY! To add to it, the car can park itself. You can pull over, get out, hit a button on your cell phone, and the car will zip down the street on it’s own to find a parking space, so you can get on with your business. Hit a different button and it comes right back. Wow. Seriously. Wow.
