Joey is fighting cancer for the 2nd time in his short life and needs your help. Find out how you can be apart of his fight.

A bone marrow drive is being organized in honor of 11-year-old Joey Caretti with the goal of expanding the base of the national bone marrow registry while simultaneously attempting to find a donor with a close genetic match to Joey. The drive takes place Dec. 19, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Morgan Elementary School, 53800 Mound Road in Shelby Township.

Caretti battled and beat a very rare brain cancer during the past 19 months. On Nov. 11, he rang a bell to symbolize the end of chemotherapy as his family cheered.

A few weeks later, he became weaker and very tired. Testing and a biopsy showed he has a second cancer – leukemia.

Caretti now faces more chemotherapy and needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.

To register as a bone marrow donor, the procedure is quick and painless, involving a simple inner cheek swabbing and some paperwork. Testing is limited to people ages 18-60 who are in good health. There is a suggested donation of $10.

If you do not meet the age or health requirements, or wish to give in a different way, a monetary gift helps defray the estimated cost of $100 per person to process the possible donors for the national registry.

Visit Caretti’s Be the Match page at www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/joeycaretti to donate, and to

learn how to join the registry if you cannot attend and what happens if you are a match.

Getting tested at the bone marrow drive and joining the national registry increase the chances of finding of a match for Caretti and other cancer patients seeking a match to live.
