You’ve probably heard Grouplove’s song, “Tongue Tied,” before but why can’t you quite place where? And who is this band?

The fivesome from Los Angeles got together in 2010, but their backstory is more romantic than Almost Famous. Singer Christian Zucconi skipped out of New York and into LA where he took odd jobs as a bartender and truck driver to get by, while playing open mic nights where he could. He met singer Hannah Hooper, the two fell in love at first sight, and (as the story has it) jetted off to an artist commune outside of Greece.

Meanwhile, guitarist Andrew Wessen was headed from LA to that very same commune. He convinced drummer Ryan Rabin to join him. Bassist Sean Gadd got in the mix and the five bonded. Later, when they were all back in LA, they decided it made good sense to forma band.

Sound crazy? It kind of is, but they all swear its the truth.

“We hate our story,” Hooper told the Los Angeles Times. “It sounds like we’re all just like, ‘Oh, let’s just lead our amazing lives and go to Greece for the summer!’ It’s quite the opposite of that.”

Where you first heard “Tongue Tied” was probably in an iPad Touch commercial that featured the infectiously catchy song — back in 2011. But they’d prefer not to be an “Apple” band.

“It was one of those songs that came fast and came together in the studio well and ended up being this fun, upbeat thing,” Zucconi told the AV Club. “People liked it and wanted to use it for things, and that’s cool with us, as long as we’re making music for us and not just to be used in a commercial.”
