Trevor Foster, a Indiana teenager sporting a pink Mohawk in honor of his mother’s breast cancer battle was banned from trying out for his school’s basketball team. The sixth-grader and his older brother both shaved their heads. They left a thin strip of hair on top, a breast cancer ribbon design on one side and dyed everything pink.

The boys’ mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and has gone through several surgeries since. The family was shocked after the boy’s principal told him that he wouldn’t be able to try out for the school basketball team unless he changed his hair style.

The boy’s father went on Facebook, posted pictures of his sons’ haircuts and asked for support from the community. He also called the school and school board members. Eventually, he got an apologetic phone call from the principal, who explained that the boy had misunderstood what she said. She told the family that the boy could try out for the basketball team and that she wants him to help him organize a school-wide effort to raise funds for breast cancer research.
