We’re used to schools closing this time of the year due to the weather. Luckily, we’re having a mild December so dangerous driving conditions are nothing to worry about right now. Although, several local schools around Michigan are still canceling classes.

In the midst of all of the chaos after recent school shootings in Connecticut and talks of the world ending, many Michigan schools have canceled classes for the remainder of the year. Schools in Lapeer and Genesee County have canceled all of their classes for the rest of this week when they would normally continue class up until Friday, December 21st. The students will return back to their normal schedule on January 7th. The district leaders have heard of multiple rumors involving acts of violence. The threats and rumors going around combined with the theory of the world ending with Myan Calender, has caused serious distraction for the students.

The Lapeer superintendent addressed the situation on the district’s website explaining his reasoning for the cancellation of classes, “… rumors circulating in our district, and in neighboring districts, about potential threats of violence against students. Additionally, rumors connected to the Mayan calendar predicted end of the world on Friday have also surfaced.”

So far, five districts in Lapeer County and 20 districts in Genesee County announced Wednesday evening that classes will be canceled Thursday and Friday.
