In a recent interview, the screenwriter behind the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie says there will be sex. And lots of it, apparently.

The film’s writer Kelly Marcel, who previously worked on the TV show Terra Nova, told The Sunday Times in the UK that those who loved the book will not be disappointed.

“We are 100 percent going there,” Marcel told the paper. “It will be rated NC-17. It will be raunchy.”

But if the movie earns an NC-17 rating, what does that mean for fans?

Often films that earn the severe rating, which means no one 17 and under would be admitted into the theater, are kept out of mainstream theater chains. Some newspapers won’t even carry ads for the movie making it hard for most NC-17 films to make much money at the box office. The highest grossing film as of now with the rating is 1995’s Showgirls, which made a little over $20 million.

Just this year, Killer Joe starring Matthew McConaughey earned nearly $2 million with its NC-17, while last year Michael Fassbender’s nether regions earned Shame the hurtful rating and a final box office tally of $3.9 million.

But for now this is all hypothetical according to a rep for Universal who told E! News, “A screenplay has not yet been written, a rating has not been designated and we have no further comment.”

Do you think the Fifty Shades movie should stay true to the book’s steamy moments or scale it back a bit?
