Before Eminem’sThe Monster” became the track we all know and love today, it started out as something very different.

An artist by the name of Bebe Rexha wrote an early incarnation of “Monster” with Jon Bellion in 2012, which focused on her struggles after being dropped from Island Def Jam Records.

Rexha tells Chicago’s B96 that, after penning the song’s hook, she knew it would be perfect for Eminem.

“I was in the booth actually while I recording the vocals and I was like ‘whoa…this is for Eminem,’” Rexha explains. “I just hit me. It was so weird.”

The track was later submitted to the Detroit rapper, who reworked it and recruited Rihanna to sing the hook. Currently, the single sits at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
