Something You Didn’t Know About Macklemore’s Hit ‘Same Love’

When Macklemore & Ryan Lewis wrote “Same Love,” they needed a special hook. Singer/songwriter Mary Lambert had never met them before and she admits to the Associated Press that she was “sort of a last resort,” but it became a “match made in heaven.”

She got “about two or three hours” to write the song’s chorus and then record it the same night in front of the guys, who were instantly impressed.

“Same Love” is nominated for Song of the Year at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. The track didn’t hit No.1 on the charts, but it sold 2 million copies and helped further Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s career. The pair are nominated for seven awards, including  Best New Artist and Album of the Year for “The Heist.”

Lambert is openly gay and said that having her first mainstream song be about a topic that’s close to her and nominated for a Grammy at the same time is a blessing. She also adds that it’s encouraged her to be honest in her own music.

She released an EP in December. Lambert is signed to Capitol Records and will release a full-length album this year. She plans to sing about topics from female empowerment, fat shaming and domestic violence.
