During a recent sit-down with good friend and former Glee co-star Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele goes into some rare detail about her late boyfriend, Cory Monteith, including how she managed to stay strong after his tragic death last year.

“I somehow feel the insane love Cory and I had for each other morphed into this strength that I have right now,” Michele explains in the Q&A session, which is the cover story of the upcoming issue of Teen Vogue. “There’s just something about knowing he’s watching everything I’m doing and feeling like I have to do everything now not just for me but for him. I also have a safety net below me—if I fall or if it’s too much, my friends and family will be there to catch me.”

Michele also discusses her forthcoming album, Louder, and how Monteith inspired her to pursue a music career that was separate from Glee and from Broadway.

“During Glee, I felt like I was scratching that itch of being an artist,” the 27-year-old starlet tells Groff. “I was at a great place in my life and I was so unbelievably happy—my relationship with Cory made me feel like I could reach for the stars and more. So I was like, ‘I’m going to challenge myself and do this record now.’ It’s obviously pop, but I think it shows me off as a singer.”

When it comes to Michele’s favorite song from Louder, the actress/singer points to “You’re Mine,” which she says is about her relationship with Cory.

As for Cory’s favorite?

“He heard every song and gave me his notes on everything,” Michele reveals. “He loved ‘Battlefield.’ I’m getting chills thinking about it. I would say ‘Burn with You’ was his favorite. He came into the studio that day.”

Louder is set for release on March 4; listen to the album’s latest single, “What Is Love?,” here.
