When we posted a popular fan theory a few weeks back that How I Met Your Mother would conclude with the reveal that “The Mother” was actually dead the entire time Ted was telling their story to his kids, we knew the chances were slim that it was true.

But alas, the series finale of the nine season CBS sitcom has left many wondering: was this an early April Fools’ joke?

The internet has been full of revealing articles and spoilers since the show’s final episode aired last night, so we’ll just go over the highlights (and lowlights) of the last adventure of Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall and Lily:

-Within fifteen minutes of the episode (and three years TV time) Barney and Robin get divorced.

-Robin slowly but surely stops hanging with “the gang,” due in part to her busy schedule as a world famous news reporter, but also because it’s become too hard to be around her ex-husband as he hits on other women in front of her and to see Ted happy with the mother of his children. She tells Lily that they will always be friends, but things have changed.

-We finally get to see Ted and “The Mother (aka Tracy McConnell!) meet at the train station after Barney and Robin’s wedding. They fall in love, plan to marry but get pregnant with Penny…and then Luke. The eventually wed and several years later, Tracy gets sick and passes away.

-Lily and Marshall become pregnant with their third child and the two plan to move from the apartment for good (return of the Cockamouse!) Marshall’s career takes him back to corporate law before he is finally reoffered judgeship. Later, he reveals he will run for state Supreme Court.

-Reverting back to his old ways, Barney writes another Playbook and becomes a womanizer once more…until he gets a girl pregnant. At first, Barney denies paternity and acts like a jerk, and then he meets his daughter Ellie for the first time, and he is changed forever.

-The story ends with Ted’s kids calling him out for still being in love with “Aunt Robin” after all this time and encouraging him to call her because their mother has been gone for six years.  Instead, Ted shows up at Robin’s doorstep, blue French horn in hand, completely mirroring the series premiere.

So, what did you think of the HIMYM series finale? Did you like how it came full circle or was it too sad? Did anyone else want to see the gang sitting on the porch like Lily had envisioned? Vote below!
