Flashback Friday: When I Met 5SOS!

Today is an exciting day for fans of 5SOS  the band out of Australia who are the next big thing! They have a sold out show at the Royal Oak Music Theater and our exclusive private Switch Party is later this afternoon!

I wanted to share with you the first time I meet 5SOS because it’s such a cool story! 5SOS came here last year when they opened up for One Direction. At that time, I had never even heard of the band. So I’m working on the air at Amp Radio and I see these four guys walk in. Here in the studio, we have a big window that’s right in front of the Amp lounge area. The boys sit down and I see them talking and laughing. They happen to notice me in the studio so I wave. Next thing I know they get up and walk in the studio. They come in super upbeat and say, “Hey we’re here for an interview.” So I say, “Cool, grab the mic let’s do it!” Meanwhile, I still have no idea who these boys are, but I don’t panic. I’m a true professional so I will learn about them as I’m interviewing them!

Next, the tour manager comes in and informed us that there were no radio interviews scheduled for that day. The boys laughed and apologized and their manager quickly scooped them up and they left. I go and find my boss and ask him about these rockstars at Amp Radio today. He tells me about them and how they are opening up for One Direction and last minute we decided to have a Switch Party with them because they have a huge following on social media. So, sometimes Switch Parties happen and I’m clueless to them!

The Switch Party begins and I sneak out of the studio so I can go check these boys out! They were pretty awesome and I was impressed! The lucky girls there who won tickets were in heaven and freaking out! Some were even crying. 5SOS even broke out and performed Eminem “Lose Yourself” and the Detroit crowd LOVED it!

After their performance, we all got pictures with the boys. I ran back to the studio and just assumed that was the last I would see of them. To my surprise they came back to the Amp lounge area. I went out and started chatting with them about Detroit and Eminem. We took more pictures together on my phone and I invited back in the Amp studio. We were just making small talk when their manager came back in to gather them up. He asked me if I was going to the show tonight and I told him I didn’t have tickets. He told me that as a band they get so many tickets per show and they don’t know anyone in Detroit so if I wanted some he would take care of me. Heck yeah I want tickets!!

Their manager, who I now know is John, leaves me four tickets at will call for 5SOS and One Direction!! Amazing right?! What a surprise and one of the many perks as a DJ that I sometimes receive. Yes I LOVE my job.

So I go to will call and get my tickets…which were seven rows back from the side of the stage! UNBELIEVABLE seats! I had the best time at the show and obviously became a fan of 5SOS.

Pretty cool story right?! I can’t wait to see them again today at the Switch Party!
