While visiting Japan this week, President Barack Obama met the Honda-designed robot ASIMO, and the two took a little time out to kick around a soccer ball.

According to the ASIMO bio page on Honda’s website, the most recent version of the robot, dubbed the P3 model, stands at 5’2” and weights 287 lbs. ASIMO is the result of nearly two decades of robotics research and design, and as development continues, they hope that the robot could one day serve as an assistant to humans.

“Someday ASIMO might help with important tasks like assisting the elderly or a person confined to a bed or a wheelchair,” Honda writes. “ASIMO might also perform certain tasks that are dangerous to humans, such as fighting fires or cleaning up toxic spills.”

With a clear mission in mind, ASIMO will continue to inspire students around the globe to pursue science as an area of study…but for now, the very human-like robot can sure kick a soccer ball!
