Monica Lewinsky To Open Up About Affair With President Clinton In New ‘Vanity Fair’ Article

It’s been over a decade-and-a-half since former White House intern Monica Lewinsky became infamous for having an affair with President Bill Clinton.

In the years that followed, Lewinsky, now 40, has chosen to stay fairly silent on the subject in the hopes of moving forward with her life.

But now, she’s also interested in taking back her story.

Through an exclusive Vanity Fair article, Lewinsky promises to do just that, and plans to give her account of the scandal that made headlines across the world.

“I am determined to have a different ending to my story,” she says. “I’ve decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet so that I can take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past. (What this will cost me, I will soon find out.)”

“Sure, my boss took advantage of me, but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship,” Lewinsky writes. “Any ‘abuse’ came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.”

In the aftermath of the affair going public, Lewinsky says that she’s had a hard time finding work and escaping what prospective employers have referred to as her “history,” but it was a recent tragedy that was the real reason she felt the need to share her account.

Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old Rutgers freshman who committed suicide in 2010 after a secretly filmed webcam video that showed him kissing another man went viral, reminded Lewinsky of the pain and bullying she endured and inspired her to finally step forward.

Lewinsky says she now has a mission to, “get involved with efforts on behalf of victims of online humiliation and harassment and to start speaking on this topic in public forums” and the Vanity Fair article seems to be her first step.

Monica Lewinsky’s entire editorial will be featured in the May issue of Vanity Fair, which is due out digitally on Thursday, May 8.
