The boys at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach are rumored to be staging an NFL-style “prom draft” to select their dates to the big dance; a tradition that school administrators are trying to discourage, according to Daily Pilot.

More surprising is the fact that most of the female draftees seem to be okay with attending with whoever picks them, though its often based on looks. “A lot of the girls respect the draft and stick with those dates,” a student told the L.A. Times of the tradition that seems to have been going on for a couple of years.

One “general manager” reportedly paid $140 for the right to draft a dream girl with whom he rarely speaks.

“It’s awkward because he spent a large amount of money to go with someone he doesn’t talk to,” a fellow student said. “And she finds it awkward that he chose her.”

Meanwhile, students seem to be at odds with school administrators about whether or not the prom-asking system objectifies women.

The L.A. Times writes that the only reason many teen girls have been upset by the alleged situation in the past is because junior boys are asking sophomores to go to the prom, instead of girls in their own grade.

“The whole premise of it is not bad at all,” a female junior told the Times. “The way they’ve labeled it as a draft is not the nicest way to ask a girl, but I don’t think it’s objectifying women.”

However, Martha Fluor, a vice president of the Newport Beach school system, is saying that drafting prom dates could get students expelled, especially if cash is being exchanged.

“It’s degrading them, objectifying them,” Fluor told the Times. “Are we inoculating our students by virtue of what’s on TV, what’s occurring in our society?”

Corona del Mar High School principal Kathy Scott also to reach out to parents via email to voice the school’s disapproval of the situation, stating, “it is not OK for any student to be objected or judged in any way.”
