Alright super fans – we know you all are more than well-versed in your 5 Seconds of Summer trivia, but maybe we can get you with just one of these fun facts!

To celebrate the release of 5SOS’s debut, self-titled album, which dropped today (July 22) in the U.S., we’re bringing you the 5 Things You Should Know About 5 Seconds of Summer!

1.  The Band Almost Wasn’t Called 5 Seconds of Summer

While we can’t imagine not saying the word ‘5SOS’ on a daily basis, the Aussie band almost wasn’t called 5 Seconds of Summer at all. In fact, the group considered the names ‘Bromance’ and ‘The Powerpuff Blokes’ until Michael came up with their current moniker in math class.

The rest of the guys apparently didn’t like it at first, but luckily, it seems to have grown on them!

2.  Ashton Wasn’t Exactly a Fan of Luke, Michael and Calum

Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood became friends and formed 5SOS while attending the same Christian college in Australia, but Ashton Irwin didn’t join the band until late 2011. However, he did know of his future bandmates…and he allegedly wasn’t their biggest fan!

Rumor has it that Ashton had seen their YouTube videos and thought they acted a bit too silly. Later, Michael sent Ashton a Facebook message asking him to play with them at Sydney’s Annadale Hotel, promising there would be “200 screaming fans” in the audience. Instead, there were 12…including Ashton’s mom!

Despite the small crowd, the boys liked playing together, and decided to make the lineup official.

Oh, and those YouTube videos? They ended up getting the band signed!

3.  One Direction Helped Them Achieve their Popularity

Although 5SOS would have definitely achieved popularity off of their own sheer talent, the guys of One Direction also helped bring awareness to the band in its early stages.

After Louis Tomlinson tweeted a YouTube link to their song “Gotta Get Out” and Niall Horan tweeted a link to “Out of My Limit” in 2012, 5SOS was invited to open for 1D on their Take Me Home tour, which brought them international success.

The group is also opening for 1D on this year’s Where We Are Tour, which hits Detroit next month on August 16 and 17 at Ford Field.

4.  …But Don’t Call Them ‘The Next One Direction’

Despite the fact that the guys of 5SOS are a band of boys, they do not consider themselves to be ‘the next One Direction.’

“People were already calling us the new One Direction in Australia, but in our minds we’re a lot different from them,” Luke told Billboard of touring with 1D. “We play guitars. We’re rockier. But we thought that if you put us right next to each other, it would actually show people how different we are.”

“We’re not a boy band — we’re a band,” Ashton added. “We don’t want to be called the next One Direction. That’s not us.”

5.  The Band Has a Very Cleanly Pre-Show Ritual

While some bands might take a shot or have a dance party before going on stage, 5SOS has a different pre-show ritual: brushing their teeth!

That’s right – the band is known to scrub their pearly whites as a group before playing for thousands of screaming fans. Hey, you never know when you might need to have fresh breath!
