At this year’s VMAs, Miley Cyrus dedicated her ‘Best Video’ win for “Wrecking Ball” to the homeless youth in Los Angeles by having someone with first-hand experience accept the award.

Her date, Jesse Helt, took the stage and made a heartfelt speech about being one of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in L.A.

“I have survived in shelters all over this city…Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight,” the aspiring model told the crowd.

Afterwards, Helt encouraged viewers and audience members to visit Miley Cyrus’s Facebook page and donate to the organization My Friend’s Place, which works to combat homelessness in Hollywood.

Cyrus was later praised for using her publicity for such positive reasons, but now, some of the darker elements of Jesse Helt’s past are coming to light.

According to E! News, Helt is wanted by police for violating his probation, which stems from alleged criminal trespassing and criminal mischief charges in 2010.

Meanwhile, The Mirror reports that Helt, a Salem, Oregon native, also had a warrant issued for his arrest in 2011 for violating his probation multiple times by “failing to provide a urine sample for cops, using marijuana, failing to report to his probation officer, breaching his curfew and not completing community service.”

A Judicial Services Specialist Jon Troike told The Sun (via Daily Mail) of Jesse’s situation, “He still has an outstanding warrant. If he’s contacted by the police in Oregon he would be arrested.”

Cyrus has not commented on the matter.
