Kanye West was quick to say Beck didn’t deserve to win Album of the Year last night (Feb. 8) at the GRAMMYs. But it turns out, Beck didn’t think he did, either.

A few hours after Kanye (jokingly) bum-rushed the stage to steal Beck’s prize in Beyoncé’s honor, just as he had six years ago at the MTV Video Awards—we know Taylor Swift will never forget that—the Morning Phase singer was asked about Kanye’s comments that he should “respect artistry” and relinquish the award to Queen Bey.

Beck took the higher road, praising Kanye and his stage crash to Us Weekly, saying, “I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?

“You can’t please everybody, man,” he said of Kanye’s distaste for his win. “I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
