“What would the vote mean to you?” a magistrate asks Carey Mulligan in the trailer for Suffragette, a film set in 1912 England when women were fighting for that very right. And by fighting, the film clearly demonstrates, they meant physically fighting: setting off little bombs across the city, throwing rocks through windows and congregating en masse to demonstrate. Apparently, it scared the men of England very much.

Meryl Streep plays real-life historical figure and suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, who advocates militaristic tactics via the Women’s Social and Political Union are the focus of the trailer.

Mulligan, along with Helena Bonham Carter, play the “ordinary women” who fought for suffrage.

When does Suffragette open in theaters?
