This morning I woke up to several notifications that a handful of my Facebook friends have “Marked themselves safe during the protests in Charlotte, North Carolina.”

Well, no s***. You’re residents of Saint Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, Novi, Warren, and Livonia.

Before the vein in my head comes out let’s back up a bit:

In 2014, Mark Zuckerberg launched the ‘Safety Check’ feature on Facebook.

In the description from the launch Zuckerberg explains, “Safety Check is our way of helping our community during natural disasters and gives you an easy and simple way to say you’re safe and check on all your friends and family in one place.”

In 2016 alone, the Facebook Safety Check has notified users that their loved ones have been marked safe in cities such as; Ankara, Brussels, Lahore, Orlando, Antananarivo, Ataturk Airport, Dallas, Nice, Munich, Quetta, Gothenburg, Central Italy, Davao City, Manhattan, and most recently, Charlotte.

Subsequently, this feature started serving as the “Ignorant D-Bag” check as well. While victims of these areas are letting mass amounts of their connections know they’re safe in a time of terror, others are using it for a cheeky laugh.

“Lighten up!”, they’ll say. “It’s just a joke!”, “They shouldn’t of made that feature then!”

I get it. We’re the “generation of oversensitivity”. But let’s think back. During 9-11, during Columbine, during Hurricane Katrina, when the same coat of terror waved over victims and their loved ones… did you pick up your phone from your house in Taylor and call all your friends to say, “LOL HEY GUYS I’M SAFE!!”

Probably not.

So why are you doing it now?
